We also have not invited experts with ready power point presentations. There was only one, decided in advanced main topic of the conference, which should be an issue that matters for all participants of the meeting. There were many approaches to that main topic, different opinions, and nobody actually has ready solutions and answers. Participants of our open space were all directly connected with the main topic of our conference, they did all have experience in youth work, in intercultural, civic and peace education. They all were involved enough to take responsibility for discussions that took place and for results of those discussions.
During open space each participant had an opportunity to propose his or her own topic that is particularly important for them, and is somehow connected with the main topic. In this way we created the program for open space discussions and participants decided which topics were important for them, in which discussion they wanted to take part. This way we created working groups.
Groups worked parallelly in different places - they themselves decided if, how, where and when they wanted to discuss each topic. Each group prepared documentation of their discussion by putting down notes in keywords. This documentation was used to share results of each discussion with other groups. At the end of the open space each participant got book of proceedings with results of all discussions that took place.
As discussions were not enough for most of participants, there was one more part of open space conference. During last phase participants had a chance to plan future projects together. Each person had a chance to clarify idea of an activity that he or she wanted to organize. It was essential that each idea had one person that felt responsible for implementing the project, and that the first step of the project was planned in details. Notes about those projects were also copied and attached to the results of discussions.
The treasure and visible result of the project is an Open Space Book of Proceedings - with reports on all of the discussions that were held, next steps of future projects and a contact list of all participants. Now, it depends on participants how do they want to make use of the book and whether they will implement new ideas for common projects. Now, its time for actions :)
